Artist Talk: Juncture by Ian Rawlinson

3pm | £5

Image: Crossing by Ian Rawlinson (2023), etching & photo etching on paper, 40 x 53cm

In 2011, artist Ian Rawlinson returned to his hometown of Cambridge intending to make a short film that would combine footage of the area surrounding his childhood home with images of his recent paintings. Although he’d made a series of relief/carborundum prints prior to this, the imagery from the film inspired him to make his first etching in nearly 20 years. Rawlinson made two further films and began producing work on the theme of place and memory.

Rawlinson’s combination of film making, printmaking and memory will be at the heart of his talk at The Burton. He will discuss how his experience of using these different media has developed the work he’s pursued in recent years; how his encounters with other artists’ work has played its part in enhancing his interdisciplinary approach, and how the subtlety of developing ideas through the filter of memory is intertwined with the technical aspects of printmaking. A screening of Rawlinson’s short films will be part of the presentation, and he will also show a further selection of his prints at the talk.

Ian Rawlinson is an artist who lives and works in London. He studied at Winchester School of Art and the Royal College of Art. To date, his work has been shown in many group and solo exhibitions, both in the UK and internationally, and is held in public and private collections. His work has won several awards and he was recently elected an associate member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. www.ianrawlinson.com
