The Burton Youth Collective (BYC) went on an art road trip last weekend to visit artist Emma Stibbon RA at her studio at Spike Island in Bristol.
Emma is currently preparing new works for her upcoming exhibition at The Burton, and the 10 young people were treated to a tour of her studio and an exclusive preview of new artworks based on recent field trips to the North Devon coast. The BYC also had the opportunity to see Emma’s archive and ask questions about her creative process and journey to being an artist.
A tour of the Spike Island studio complex was followed by lunch and time to see the current exhibitions Danielle Dean ‘This Could All Be Yours!’ and Dan Guthrie ‘Empty Alcove / Rotting Figure’.
The BYC members then got creative at a printmaking workshop run by artist Jemma Gunning where they experimented with mark-making and created their own monoprints.
Thank you to Emma, Jemma and Spike Island for giving the BYC such a warm welcome and an inspiring day of artistic adventures.
This trip was generously funded by a grant from the Gibbons Family Trust.
Emma Stibbon RA: Melting Ice | Rising Tides runs from 10 May – 5 July at The Burton at Bideford. Free entry.
The BYC is for 14–18 year olds and meets fortnightly on a Wednesday evening to learn new creative skills and meet practising artists. See our website for more details or email carole@theburton.org
