Come and meet some of the artists exhibiting work in Other Worlds: New Works from the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. They will be sharing insights into their work and demonstrating their techniques. Printing comes in many forms; come and be amazed and perhaps you’ll be inspired to try out printing yourself in one of our many upcoming courses.
Participating artists:
Merlyn Chesterman
Merlyn Chesterman is a woodblock printmaker based in Hartland, North Devon – her work can be viewed in our Craft Gallery. She creates large woodcuts that celebrate the local landscape. She is a member of the collaboration Pine Feroda, and has exhibited internationally, including at the Royal Academy of Arts and Bankside Gallery. She will be demonstrating her woodblock technique.
Ruth Uglow
Ruth Uglow is a contemporary artist working in drawing and print. Ruth’s work explores the drawn line as an expression of life and hybridity within nature. The details within forms like a germinating seed pod, the entanglement and envelopment of growth allows her to transform the mechanics of nature through drawing into print. Uglow graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2000 and is a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. She lives and makes work at her studio in North Devon. Ruth will be explaining how she makes her detailed etching/aquatints.
Michelle Griffiths
Michelle Griffiths is Vice President of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. She studied painting and printmaking at Brighton College of Art in the 1970s. Since then, she has exhibited widely in the UK and abroad including print biennales in Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and Holland and mini print exhibitions in Spain, USA, Canada and UK. Her work is included in a number of public collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, Arts Council England, Varna in Bulgaria and the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Michelle will be demonstrating screen printing, showing a portfolio of prints and discussing the content of the prints and technical processes used.
Jim Anderson
Jim Anderson is a multi-media artist and designer who divides his time and energies between printmaking, mosaic-making, painting, teaching, and writing. His work encompasses many different media and ideas – but use of found or recycled materials is always paramount; and his work is steeped in the satirical and the surreal. At Meet the Printmakers, he will demonstrate innovative ways of using recycled materials to make dramatic and unconventional prints, particularly focusing upon stencilling, the use of handmade paper and the creation of collagraph blocks from found materials.
