Walk in the footsteps of the Bideford Witches as we retell the tragic tales of the last women to be executed for witchcraft in England.
Our self-guided audio trail will take you around the Bideford landmarks that feature in the stories of Temperance Lloyd, Susanna Edwards and Mary Trembles, and reveal the historical and cultural influences that led to their fates.
Pick up a free map from the gallery and follow the trail using your smartphone to listen to the recordings at each stop. Look for a small panel or poster at each point shown on the map, scan the QR Code with your phone’s camera or a scanning app and it will take you through to an audio recording for that location. Press play and listen along to be transported back in time to the late 1600s and the lives of Temperance Lloyd, Susanna Edwards and Mary Trembles. You can also access these recordings on the Soundcloud website or via our dedicated website page.
Thank you to Dr John Callow, whose book The Last Witches of England: A Tragedy of Sorcery and Superstition was vital to the development of this trail, and the Bideford Bridge Trust for funding the project.
