Supporting Contemporary Craftspeople is an integral part of the craft gallery at the Burton at Bideford. The Burton promotes and supports over 40 contemporary craftspeople from around the UK. Precious and non-precious jewellery sit alongside ceramics, prints, textiles and metalwork.

Our craft gallery is the perfect place to see and purchase the very best of contemporary craft, with unique pieces of work you will never find anywhere else. Come browse in-person to see the quality and individuality of these pieces. Also, visit our online shop to see the range of crafts on we have on offer to buy.

Makers include Svend Bayer, Clive Bowen, Anne Farag, Sarah Young, Amanda Anderson, Bill and Peach Shaw and Hilary Paynter. Craft showcase exhibitions are programmed to run throughout the year and they give the Burton at Bideford a chance to introduce our visitors to emerging artists and new makers.

Every few months, we choose a particular artist and their craft work and highlight it in its own ‘showcase’, which means further in-shop promotion, articles on the website and a dedicated area in the craft gallery.

The Own Art Scheme

The Burton at Bideford is a member of the Own Art scheme.

Own Art is a national initiative that makes buying contemporary art and craft affordable by letting you spread the cost of your purchase over 10 months with an interest-free loan.

Own Art loans are available for the purchase of contemporary art and craft of any kind and in any media. That means you can choose from paintings, prints, drawings and sculpture, to glassware, ceramics, jewellery, furniture and textiles – as long as the work is by contemporary artists, is original artwork and within limited editions of 150.

Own Art is operated by ArtCo Trading Ltd (a wholly-owned subsidiary company of Arts Council England) in partnership with Arts Council England, Creative Scotland, Arts Council of Northern Ireland and our credit provider Hitachi Capital Consumer Finance.

The Burton proudly supports an eclectic range of local makers by selling their works in the Craft Gallery and via the online shop.

We support a range of jewellers, potters, painters, printmakers, furniture makers and the list goes on.
